"Oak Winter" by Kevin Nakagawa, CA 2006

4.25" x 5.5" Glossy Card stock. Dye based and pigment inks. White gel pen.

Unmounted Sheet Image Winters Wind from Symmetry sheet 4. Oak Branch 179G.

1) Stamp Winter's Wind in black/blue. I colored the image in black ink and stamped it out once. With some of that black remaining on the rubber, I inked the image up with a #10 Marvy Light Blue. I wanted the image to be a dark blue/grey and this was the only way I could get that. I didn't worry about polluting the blue pad up with the black ink as the blue pad was pretty juicy --and I generally don't worry about that kind of thing anyway. "Anything for the desired result" I always say. Almost always.

2) A range of blue tones and black was blended on to the card leaving some streaks of the white under Winter's Wind. Starting with a very light blue such as a Ranger Sea Shells "Cloudy Blue" streak/sponge your tone on to the card stock under the figure and around the perimeter of the image face. Build light, medium, and dark toned blues in the same way and end with black on the four corners.

3) Stamp the Oak Tree Lg. 179G in to the scene using black ink. I then turned the Oak Tree upside down and stamped it in a dark blue matching up the tree trunks. This represented a shadow.

4) Using white pigment ink on a cotton swab, white paint was lightly tapped into the scene below the tree and in some of the center branches. This represents fog and illumination.

5) A white gel pen was used to add highlights and sparkle to the scene in the figures hair, through the air, and on the tree branches. Some additional white pigment ink was tapped on to some of the dots to illuminate them.
