Artist's Notes: This piece is representation of many things. The grave marker portrayed in this piece is based on one I actually saw in small cemetery in rural Iowa. The grave marker represents the past (ie the sins of our fathers)...the child represents the future...the wild rose in the lower left corner is a reference to the "Legend of the Cherokee Rose" which states that during the Cherokee Trail of Tears many Cherokee died, old, young and ill were the hardest hit. As they walked the Trail of Tears, every place a tear fell from a grieving person, the wild rose grew. The piece is edged in gold and also had gold highlights in various areas..the gold is representational of the initial reason the Cherokee were forced off their land and made to walk the Trail of Tears...gold was found on their land and greed from others for this gold pushed them off the land. The title brings it all together.."Lest We Forget.."
